Is College Worth It? How about a country girl’s honest thoughts? For many years, there was one piece of advice nearly every young person heard. “Go to college, get a degree, and you’ll have a good life.”
That was considered the American dream. Today, I’m not so sure the answer is that simple. Please don’t misunderstand me. College is a wonderful choice for many careers. If you want to become a doctor, nurse, teacher, engineer, lawyer, or another licensed professional, higher education is often necessary. But what about everyone else?
Is spending tens of thousands of dollars on a college degree always the best path? Or are there now other ways to learn valuable skills without carrying student loan payments for years? These are questions more families are asking every day.
Looking Back at Life
Growing up on a small farm in Nebraska, we didn’t have much money. My parents taught us that if something needed to be done, you rolled up your sleeves and did it. We fed livestock before school. We stacked hay in the summer heat. We worked in the garden and helped wherever we were needed. We were in 4-H and learned lots there.
Those experiences taught me something that no classroom could. Hard work matters. Responsibility matters. And learning never stops. Back then, success wasn’t measured by the diploma hanging on the wall. It was measured by your character, your willingness to work, and your ability to solve problems. Those lessons have stayed with me my entire life.
College Has Become More Expensive
There is no denying that college costs have increased dramatically over the years. Many students graduate with thousands of dollars in student loans. Some spend years, or even decades, paying them back. That doesn’t mean college isn’t worthwhile.
It simply means families should carefully consider whether the degree they are pursuing is likely to provide enough income to justify the investment. Education should open doors, not become a financial burden that follows someone for years.
A Degree Doesn’t Always Guarantee Success
Years ago, earning a college degree almost guaranteed better job opportunities. Today, things have changed.
Many employers care just as much about experience, skills, certifications, and a person’s willingness to learn as they do about a diploma. Technology changes so quickly that people often need to keep learning long after graduation. The truth is, education is no longer something you finish. It is something you continue throughout your life.
Learning Looks Different Today
When I retired, I thought my learning days were behind me. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Instead of slowing down, I started learning about blogging, online marketing, affiliate marketing, artificial intelligence, websites, search engine optimization, and social media.
None of those subjects were offered when I was growing up. Most didn’t even exist. Yet here I am, learning something new almost every day. That has shown me something important. You don’t have to sit in a classroom to gain valuable knowledge anymore.
The Internet Changed Everything
Today, people can learn almost anything online. You can study photography, bookkeeping, website design, cooking, writing, marketing, investing, gardening, or hundreds of other skills from the comfort of your own home.
Some programmes are free. Others are affordable. Many allow you to learn at your own pace instead of following a traditional school schedule. For people who are willing to put in the work, these opportunities can be life-changing.
Learning While You Earn
One thing I appreciate about today’s online education is that many programs teach practical skills you can use right away. Instead of spending several years preparing for a career, some people begin applying what they learn within weeks or months. That doesn’t mean success happens overnight.
Far from it. Like anything worthwhile, it takes commitment, patience, and consistent effort. But it is encouraging to know there are opportunities where learning and earning can happen at the same time.
There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Answer
Some people will always benefit from a traditional college education. Others may find that trade schools, apprenticeships, certification programmes, military service, entrepreneurship, or online learning fit their goals much better. The important thing is to choose the path that matches your dreams, your finances, and the kind of life you want to build.
Don’t follow a path simply because everyone else expects you to. Make an informed decision.
My Personal Choice
After retiring, I decided to keep learning instead of slowing down. That decision has introduced me to wonderful people, new friendships, and opportunities I never imagined were possible. I’ve learned how to build websites. I’ve learned how to write articles. I’ve learned how to help others discover products and opportunities that may improve their lives. Most of all, I’ve learned that age doesn’t limit your ability to grow. Curiosity keeps us young.
So… Is College Worth It?
Only you can answer that question. For some people, absolutely. For others, there may be a better path. The world has changed, and so has education.
Today, success isn’t limited to a college campus. It can begin in a workshop, a trade school, a small business, an apprenticeship, or even at the kitchen table with a laptop and a willingness to learn.
No matter which path you choose, remember this: Never stop learning. Keep asking questions. Keep improving your skills. Keep believing in yourself. Because education isn’t about collecting diplomas. It’s about becoming the best version of yourself.
